Project goal

In recent years, the agricultural market has been rapidly following other industries towards digitalization and e-commerce. According to a J.P. Morgan report, the global e-commerce market is growing rapidly, and the agricultural sector is no exception. It is predicted that the global value of online agricultural product sales will increase to USD 588 billion by 2031, representing an average annual growth rate of 693%.

Market analysis also revealed that farmers increasingly seek convenient solutions for purchasing plant protection products, fertilizers, and other necessary items for their daily work without having to leave their farms at any time. This trend intensified even more during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project's goal for our client was to diversify distribution channels, including the launch of a new sales channel that would contribute to sales growth and further strengthen the company's leading position in the industry. Ampol-Merol also wanted to streamline the purchasing process, enabling online product purchases without direct contact with a seller. It was important for customers to easily browse the offerings, make purchases through an intuitive interface, and save time normally spent contacting customer service. Another key aspect was creating a positive customer experience - stronger purchase personalization, tracking statuses, access to order history, product recommendations, and information about current promotions and discounts.

Challenge

Before starting the project, we identified several key challenges related to the industry's specifics, internal processes, and the company's operations. Each required an appropriate approach and adaptation of technology and created solutions to Ampol-Merol's specific needs. The main challenges included:

  • Wholesale sales and the need to adapt the store interface and purchase processes to its specifics
  • Handling multiple product units of measurement and ensuring consistency and accuracy of calculations
  • Calculating delivery and transportation costs for retail and wholesale products
  • Integration with fiscal cash registers and eliminating the issue of rounding amounts
  • Full integration with the internal ERP system
  • The possibility of advanced data and customer behavior analytics

Solution

To meet the client's needs and numerous project challenges, we built a dedicated e-commerce platform dressed in a modern design tailored to the client's industry. Using the Sylius e-commerce framework as the base allowed us to focus on perfectly adapting the entire solution to Ampol-Merol's specific needs and implementing necessary functionality and integration with the company's IT ecosystem.

The store was designed to handle both retail and wholesale sales, allowing flexible adaptation of the offer to the needs of different customer groups. Visitors have access to a clear product catalog organized into various groups and categories with precise filtering options. They can easily order products in different units of measurement such as kilograms, tons, liters, quantities, or specific dimensions, and combine wholesale products in one order. We also implemented advanced algorithms for calculating transport costs, taking into account product specifics and the company's logistics processes.

We ensured full integration with the company's ERP system, allowing real-time sales process representation and data management. Two-way data synchronization ensures the currency of offers, stock levels, orders, and other essential information. The platform features various analytical solutions for monitoring customer behaviors using tools like Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, enabling greater personalization of the offer and using this information to increase sales effectiveness.

Project outcomes

BEFORE

  • Limited distribution diversification to traditional sales channels
  • Reduced product availability and range limited by sales branch locations
  • More time-consuming purchasing process requiring contact with a seller
  • Lack of analytical tools limiting data analysis and increasing sales effectiveness
  • Lack of process automation and ERP system integration

AFTER

  • Increased distribution diversification through a new sales channel
  • Expanded range and product availability regardless of location
  • Increased customer satisfaction - shortened purchasing process and 24/7 access to an intuitive shopping platform
  • Enhanced sales effectiveness through the analysis of customer purchasing behaviors
  • Process automation and full integration with the ERP system

What the company gained

The launch of a modern e-commerce platform fits into Ampol-Merol's digital transformation strategy, bringing many benefits. First and foremost, the company gained a new, dynamic sales channel, which proved to be exceptionally effective and secured the first orders immediately after launch. This also allowed for the expansion of the range and availability of offered products regardless of customer location. With process automation and full integration with the ERP system, operations related to the new distribution channel are more efficient and less prone to errors, leading to operational cost optimization.

The availability of analytical tools and better data collection about customers enables more precise monitoring of customer purchasing behaviors and offer personalization. This opens up possibilities for optimizing and increasing sales effectiveness. The new intuitive and user-friendly shopping platform shortened the time needed to place orders while offering 24/7 access to services, which raised the level of customer satisfaction.

As a result, Ampol-Merol strengthened its position as a leader in the agro industry, being perceived as an innovative company that effectively combines traditional values with modern technological solutions.
